Central American Airlines L-410 Turbolet twin-engined aircraft crashed in central Honduras yesterday, killing all 14 passengers on board, including the Honduran government's Vice Minister for Public Works Rodolfo Rovelo, former Minister of Finance Carlos Chain, and trade union leader Israel Salinas of the United Confederation of Workers of Honduras (CUTH). Four North Americans also died in the crash, including Flynn Tomchuk of Richland, Washington, and Peter Michael Jong of Toronto, Canada. Mr. Flynn was the co-owner of landscaping firm SunScapes, Inc. He was traveling in the region on a mission trip with his family. Mr. Jong was in Honduras teaching Bible studies. The plane, built by LET Aircraft Industries of the Czech Republic, was on a routine 40-minute flight from San Pedro Sula to Tegucigalpa when it experienced bad weather and went down in a densely forested mountainous area near the town of Santa Ana (Francisco Morazan). It was attempting to land at Tegucigalpa's Toncontín International Airport. Honduras' Civil Aviation Service confirmed that the accident occurred just after 8 am EST, minutes after air traffic controllers instructed the pilot to land. More than 10 aircraft have crashed near Toncontín since 1989. (2/15/11)
