easyJet opening its first African base

easyJet, founded by Greek-Cypriot entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou in 1995, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its first flight this year. During this time, it has grown from zero to the second largest low-cost airline in Europe. It is now preparing to open its first base in Africa.

easyJet's first African base will be in Morocco. It will be based at the airport in Morocco's fourth largest city, Marrakech, where it has been operating for a long time.

In the summer 2025 flight schedule, it operates routes to Marrakech from Lisbon, Porto, Malaga, Naples, Milan (Malpensa), Nice, Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes, Paris (CDG), Geneva, EuroAirport, Amsterdam, London Gatwick, Luton and Southend airports, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh. It offers a total of 22 destinations from Marrakech by direct flight.

It is establishing a base with the arrival of the summer 2026 flight schedule. Thanks to this, it will open new routes Marrakech - Hamburg, Marrakech - Strasbourg and Marrakech - Lille.

There is speculation that easyJet is for sale. Shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is said to be interested in a capital injection into easyJet. The airline's shares have shot up by 12%.

This would not be the first attempt to take over easyJet. In 2021, Wizz Air offered 1.7 billion euros to take over easyJet. The combined Wizz Air - easyJet company would be a strong counterweight to Ryanair. However, in September 2021, easyJet rejected the offer.
